FAST 10: DJ Sarah

If the fight for equal representation within the music industry were a decadent chocolate cake, DJ Sarah would be the cherry on top…

A key component if you will, a refreshing perspective, and an all-round really damn important part of the whole ensemble. As well as being one-half of Interstellar Fugitives, a duo formed with fellow local selector Georgia Bird, she also curates and operates the notorious Neurotiq Erotiq event series, a project which has overtaken venues Sub Club, Boney, The Gasometer, Glamorama and Xe54, showcasing a plethora of female and gender non-conforming artists such as Kate Miller, Eclair Fifi, Whiskey Houston, Female Wizard, Pjenne, Millú, Yollks & Emma Stevenson.

From her DJ workshop classes co-run with fellow local selector Baby G, to her publicly available spreadsheet listing female/gender non-conforming DJs and artists, not to mention her constant promotion and support of industry projects that advance the progression of a more equal future, DJ Sarah is setting the standard for how to conduct yourself in the current social climate.

Fresh from DJ Sarah’s recent Neurotiq Paradise x Erotiq Dystopia event which saw DJ Sarah musically venn diagram herself in a spectacular union with Waxo Paradiso duo Simon TK and Edd Fisher, DJ Sarah took the time to feature in our next instalment of Fast 10, a series where we propose the same 10 questions to a string of the local industries leading women. Without further ado…

1. THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE MY MUSIC:
Wild, unmethodical, personal.

2. A FEMALE ARTIST EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW:
I get asked this a lot. I had a list in my phone notes that I started passing around, but it’s recently evolved into a public spreadsheet of femme/GNC artists. Shoutouts to JAZZ, RBI and HAYJ ... get’em sisters.

3. A TRACK I’M EMBARRASSED TO LOVE:
Sweet but Psycho’ by Ava Max.

4. THE LOCAL INDUSTRY NEEDS MORE:

24hr licenses, and snacks in the club.

5. MY DRINK OF CHOICE AT A GIG:
Vodka, lime soda pre-5am, vodka apple post-5am. Or anything free. Also Double Blacks.

6. WHAT EMPOWERS ME:
Playing a great set in front of someone who has been rude to me.

7. THE BEST GIG I’VE EVER PLAYED:
Pitch Music & Arts 2017 at 7.30 am with Georgia - the other half of Interstellar Fugitives. The sun was out, no one had slept (except us), my brother was there handing us cold Double Blacks and so many friends. Both our own and the festival’s attempts at the recording the set mysteriously got lost, which makes it a whole lot more magical, to be honest.

8. IF I WASN’T IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY I WOULD BE:
Really lost and confused. I honestly don’t know, but maybe I would’ve got my Business Degree by now that I never finished, oops.

9. SOMEONE I LOOK UP TO IS:
CC:Disco. She embodies everything that I aspire to be. Authentically and unapologetically herself, a tireless worker, clever, and just a whole lot of fun.

10: THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I HAVE EVER RECEIVED:
Life-wise: Everyone has a story. Career-wise: If you meet someone who is where you want to be, ask what you should do to get there, and then actually do it. Oh and be kind, it’s free.
