The excellent debut album from Iñigo Vontier deserves your attention…

Do you like slightly psychedelic house music that is a tad bit loose and sorta wonky in a way that reminds of an early onset mushroom trip? Well, step right up and buckle yourself in. Iñigo Vontier is a purveyor of a sound that encapsulates all those adjectives and more - and he might be at the forefront of whatever is going on in Mexico. By that we mean there has been a big wave of new producers emanating from that territory, all kinda vibrating off the same frequency. (Shubostar, Theus Mago/Bufi, Paulor, Beyou… we could go on).

Vontier just released his excellent nine-track debut LP 'El Hijo Del Maíz' on French label Lumiere Noire - and it is disorientating in the most fun way. The first time you hear it feels so loose that you might feel like you're drunk. It’s fun and you should listen to it. To celebrate the release, we asked the Mexican producer to share six tracks with us that is relevant to his craft:

This track had a massive influence on this album:

Boards of Canada - Dayvan Cowboy (2006)

Didn’t think of any track while doing my album but, Boards of Canada have been always an influence on me.’

If I could play you on track from my Calypso label it would be:

Iñigo Vontier - Marakame (2018)

I will choose Marakame from me, as I think it really captures the label sound.’

When I think of Dark Disco this track comes to mind:

Cardenales De Nuevo León - Mi Cómplice (1991)

‘I don’t know what dark disco means, honestly, I think it’s just laziness to catalogue music genres.’

A track from my current favourite Mexican producer:

DANIEL MALOSO - NO DOY NADA (2011)

’Daniel Maloso is my favourite Mexican producer. He has a punk attitude and a futuristic sound.’

This band had a big influence on my sound:

The Chemical Brothers - Hey Boy Hey Girl (1999)

’I am a 90s kid so I grew up listening to Chemical Brothers. To this day I think their productions are still an influence on me.’

This up-and-coming artist is one to look out for:

LINJA - Chaos In The Gardens Of Istanbul (Darkside)

‘I really like what Linja is doing, watch out for an early 2020 release from her on Calypso.’

A track that is a guilty pleasure:

Backstreet Boys - Everybody (Backstreet's Back) (1997)

‘90s pop was ACE’
