SIX FOR ONE: Human Movement

Human Movement is riding high off the back of new single ‘Waiting’…

Over the last five-plus years, Edward McDonald has injected Human Movement with a strong sense of creative evolution. Originally conceived as a duo, the project was known for producing the sort of highly functional tech house that would sound ace during a Boogs set at Revolver. The last couple of years, however, has seen the project flirt between various styles ranging from deep house to rave.

Fast forward to now, and after finding its feet as a solo project, Human Movement found a sweet spot with new single ‘Waiting’, a broken beat gem filled with thick atmosphere and a bittersweet melody reminding of a time when viruses weren’t named after Mexican alcohol beverages. Not only is it an earworm, but it’s a bonafide attention seeker that managed to grab the attention of BBC’s Jaguar and Danny Howard (‘Bicep meets Paul Woolford, for me it’s a double winner’).

For some insight into the machinations of the Human Movement sound, McDonald sent through some entertaining choices for Six For One…

childhood memories:

Round The Twist Theme - Intro 1989

‘I'd say this song would remind every child born in the '90s of their childhood. Some fond memories coming home from school and ripping into an episode of this and the claymation trapdoor.’

on a loop. forever:

Ex-Terrestrial - Urth Man (2018)

’Listening to a song on repeat forever is a big ask, but this has a lovely combination of breaky drums and some really calming vocals rolling throughout. So I guess this one ticks all the boxes.’

welcome to electronic music:

Robots in Disguise - DJs Got a Gun (2005)

‘Listening back to this track I really don't like it now haha. But I do recall this being the first dance music track I heard and loving that vocoder vocal straight away. I think that's what really drew me into this new world of music for me.’

music for a whimsical road trip:

Cali Red - Amra (2019)

’This song makes you wanna put your hand out the window and do that wave thingy. Very lush chords - and I’m not sure what’s going on at the start but it sounds like electronic crickets and I like that.’

music for a strobe-lit high capacity licensed venue:

Human Movement - Elevate (2020)

‘This'll work for a venue like that but this is more to just give me some streams. Plus this thing is pretty thumping if I say so myself. It was also one of those songs that came together in like a day and those usually tend to be your best work.’

2020 in a nutshell:

Ava Max - Sweet but Psycho (2020)

‘I don’t like 2020 - but I really don't like this song.’
